Penn State Basketball: Meet Kayden Mingo, The Highest-Ranked Recruit In Program History

Coming out of Long Island Lutheran High School in Glen Head, New York, Kayden Mingo was a four-star prospect and the No. 34 ranked recruit in America.

When the 6′-2″ point guard visited State College on his recruiting trip , Mingo recalled the visit to Penn State’s athletic website.

“I loved the time I spent at Penn State on my visit,” Mingo said. “It felt like home and like a place I can grow at in different ways.”

Mingo is part of the No. 26 ranked recruiting class in the country, the highest-ranked recruiting class in program history.

After Mingo committed to Penn State, coach Mike Rhoades told the website that Mingo “will bring an elite level of talent and competitiveness to the floor.”

“But he is equally as impressive as a young man and student off the floor,” he said. “Kayden can defend, score, facilitate, and attack to both create for himself and others at an impressive level. Kayden possesses our type of work ethic and competitive drive, and we can’t wait to get to work with him and welcome him into our Penn State family.”

Mingo will have big shoes to fill.

He’s more than likely going to take over at point guard for the departed Ace Baldwin, Jr., who just signed a summer contract with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Rhoades commented on Mingo earlier this summer-“He cares so much about doing things the right way, but also being a really good player and being very competitive…they’re characteristics of a good leader. But in all fairness, he’s still only been here for three and a half weeks. And being a freshman, no matter how good of a player you are in the Big Ten, this level is really, really hard, and it doesn’t mean just because you have these characteristics you have immediate success.”

It will be interesting to see how quick Mingo adapts to Division I basketball in the Big Ten.

One thing is for sure, the Nittany Lions will look to Mingo for his leadership, composure, and playmaking abilities.
