Many are confident that this Penn State team will be the one to break a near-40-year dry spell, but not nearly as many are confident enough to bet six figures on it.
But at least one person is.
Per Patrick Everson of VegasInsider, a BetMGM customer who lives in Arizona placed three bets that, frankly, most people would find jaw-dropping:
- $300,000 on Texas to win the national championship
- $200,000 on Penn State to win it all
- $115,000 on Clemson to win the whole thing.
Per Everson, if any of these tickets cash, the bettor would win $1.5 million.
To be fair, all three of these teams have realistic national title aspirations.
Penn State and Texas each made it to the College Football Playoff semifinal last season and each return plenty of star power, especially at the quarterback position (Drew Allar for Penn State, Arch Manning for Texas).
Both of those QBs could be top NFL Draft choices, as could Clemson’s Cade Klubnik.
Although Clemson didn’t have quite the same playoff success as Penn State or Texas— getting waxed at Texas in the first-round— Coach Dabo Swinney has two more national titles than Penn State’s James Franklin or Texas’ Steve Sarkisian combined.
Dabo’s pedigree— plus the ACC objectively not being as strong as the Big Ten or SEC— plays to Clemson’s advantage.
Overall, Texas has the best national championship odds of the three at +500.
Penn State’s next in line at +750 followed by Clemson at +1300.
If Penn State wins the national championship, this BetMGM user will win $1.5 million plus the $200,000 they bet.
Of course, they will also lose $415,000 since Clemson and Texas wouldn’t have won.
