Everybody who follows college wrestling even a little bit knew that Penn State star Mitchell Mesenbrink was going to make it to the semifinals of the Big Ten championships this weekend in Evanston, Illinois.

But few would have predicted the way it went down.

Mesenbrink tech-falled 15 of his 17 opponents in the regular season.

So, naturally, many assumed that Mesenbrink would get to the semifinals via tech fall. Well, thatโ€™s not what happened.

Ohio Stateโ€™s Paddy Gallagher (No. 9) beat Northwesternโ€™s Maxx Mayfield (No. 8) 7-2 to earn a shot against top-seeded Mesenbrink in the quarterfinals. But for reasons that are not clear yet, Gallagher took a medical default against Mesenbrink.

Mesenbrink won the Big Ten title last season at 165 and is now two wins away from doing it again.
