Everybody who follows college wrestling even a little bit knew that Penn State star Mitchell Mesenbrink was going to make it to the semifinals of the Big Ten championships this weekend in Evanston, Illinois.

But few would have predicted the way it went down.

Mesenbrink tech-falled 15 of his 17 opponents in the regular season.

Ohio State’s Paddy Gallagher (No. 9) beat Northwestern’s Maxx Mayfield (No. 8) 7-2 to earn a shot against top-seeded Mesenbrink in the quarterfinals. But for reasons that are not clear yet, Gallagher took a medical default against Mesenbrink.

Mesenbrink won the Big Ten title last season at 165 and is now two wins away from doing it again.
