A match that wrestling fans have wanted to see for years will have to wait a little longer.
Many fans were hoping that Penn State’s Carter Starocci and Iowa’s Gabe Arnold would finally meet at this year’s Big Ten Championships.
The two have had beef dating back to when Arnold was still in high school, and it looked like the stars were finally aligning this March.
But in Evanston, it wasn’t to be. Arnold fell to Maryland’s Jaxon Smith 3-2 in a tiebreaker, meaning that Starocci will take on Smith, not Arnold, later Saturday night.
Nittany Sports Now detailed the full beef between the two earlier this year but the short version is: Arnold has talked smack on Starocci before, and Starocci has responded.
More recently, Arnold predicted Iowa would beat Penn State in this year’s dual meet in the Bryce Jordan Center.
If Starocci and Arnold don’t meet at the NCAA Championships, the matchup will not happen at the college level. Starocci is out of eligibility after this month.
