There’s a good chance Baker Mayfield would be proud of what Penn State did following the team’s thrilling 33-30 win over USC Saturday at the Coliseum.
There’s an even better chance Penn State coach James Franklin isn’t.
To Franklin’s chagrin, defensive back Audavion Collins planted the flag with teammates looking on. After this, Franklin took the flag, but the point had been made.

It was reminiscent of what Mayfield, the confident QB on his way to winning a Heisman Trophy at Oklahoma in 2017, did after his team beat Ohio State in Columbus.

Plenty of people felt Mayfield took it too far, and there are sure to be people who feel the same about Collins. Others would be more than fine with both acts. While the topic of whether it’s acceptable to plant a flag on an opposing logo is debatable. What isn’t debatable is that Penn State got a huge win, and now has a clear path to, at the minimum, make it to the 12-team College Football Playoff.
