After plenty of drama last week, Penn State appears to have some good news on the injury front going into the USC game, which is its biggest of the season to this point.
Star RB Nick Singleton didn’t play at all in Saturday’s 27-11 win over UCLA. Starting right tackle Anthony Donkoh got hurt early in the game, only playing nine snaps.
Singleton is one of Penn State’s best players.
Through four games, Singleton’s rushed for 408 yards and three touchdowns. He’s averaged 7.2 yards per carry. He’s been effective in the passing game, catching six balls for 82 yards and two scores, and, as we saw Saturday night.
This led to more or a workload for Kaytorn Allen (21 carries, 78 yards, TD) and true freshman Quinton Martin. Martin became the team’s RB2 for the day.
Not having Singleton hurt but Franklin was pleased with the offense adjusted in the team’s 27-11 win.
Donkoh had started Penn State’s first five games at right tackle and has been among Penn State’s most-used players. Even with missing basically an entire game, he’s still played the sixth-most snaps for Penn State this season with a respectable Pro Football Focus overall grade of 67.9.
Donkoh redshirted his freshman season but did appear in four games.
He had an increased role for the Peach Bowl against Ole Miss.
Donkoh played 46 snaps— he played 49 total in his first three games— and had an offensive grade of 78.7 per Pro Football Focus. That was the highest grade among Penn State’s offensive linemen and the second overall among PSU’s offensive players.
Penn State will need all hands on deck at USC. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 on CBS.
