Drew Allar is on Pace to Make College Football History

Drew Allar is 16-3 as the Penn State starter.

Penn State QB Drew Allar has a chance to do something no QB in the history of college football has ever done.

Per Joel Haas of the Daily Collegan, the NCAA record for the lowest percentage of passes to be intercepted, with a minimum of 600 pass attempts, is 1.2, which Oregon QB Marcus Mariota set between the 2012 and 2014 seasons.

Allar has thrown 552 passes in his career and only three of them have been intercepted.

That puts Allar at 0.5%, which would break the record by a fairly wide margin if it holds up.

Allar didn’t throw an interception until Halloween last year and ended with just two compared to 25 TD passes. Allar made it 311 career passes before throwing his first pick, breaking an NCAA record held by Baylor QB Robert Griffin III who won the Heisman Trophy in 2011, three years before Mariota accomplished that feat. Although Allar has played well this season— 70.9 completion percentage, 9 TD, 1 INT— he’s not among the Heisman front runners right now. But there’s still seven games left.

Allar breaking this record would be impressive but some have developed a somewhat cynical mindset.

Although not turning the ball over in some tiff every offense prides itself on, some feel that Allar throwing picks only slightly more rarely than Penn State wrestling fails to win a national title is a sign that Penn State isn’t aggressive enough offensively.

It even led to coach James Franklin being asked a question last fall that led to one of the most infamous reporter/coach exchanges in Penn State football history.

Drew Allar has seven regular-season games left before he most likely enters the NFL Draft, so there’s no reason to think he can’t break Mariota’s mark.
