Penn State’s Position in Latest Playoff Projection

The fun thing about this college football season is that with the new 12-team playoff format, it’ll provide weekly debate on who deserves to be included.

Following tonight’s matchup between Boston College vs. Florida State, Week One will be in the books.

In my opinion, the three most impressive teams after Week One were Georgia, Penn State and USC (in that order).

Even before their win over West Virginia, all national college football analysts were forecasting Penn State to be one of the 12-playoff teams and that won’t change this week.

As he does every week, respected college football writer Brett McMurphy forecasts his playoff teams along with bowl projections.

Here’s a look at where Penn State stands per McMurphy.

Projected College Football Playoff Field:

  1. Oregon 2. Alabama 3. Miami 4. Utah 5. Georgia 6. Ohio State 7. Penn State. 8. Notre Dame 9. Ole Miss 10. USC 11. Iowa 12. Texas State

1st Round: Ole Miss vs. Notre Dame, Texas State vs. Georgia, Iowa vs. Ohio State and USC vs. Penn State.

Quarterfinals: Utah vs. Georgia, Miami vs. Ohio State, Oregon vs. Notre Dame and Alabama vs. Penn State.

Semifinals: Alabama vs. Ohio State and Oregon vs. Georgia.

National Championship: Georgia vs. Alabama

If this prediction is even remotely close to accurate…as a Penn State alum & fan for over 50 years now…I’d be very happy with a home playoff game & a quarterfinal loss in a good close game vs Bama! Although we/Penn State would finish ranked around #7 or #8…it would feel much more satisfying because of the home playoff game/win.

But one game at a time…especially after watching that USC team we have to go visit in 6-7-8 weeks. They certainly looked like a solid group last night beating LSU. That stretch of 4-5 games will determine our season…UCLA at home, @USC, @Wisky, Ohio State at home & finish with Washington at home. This 5 game stretch will tell us all we need to know about this years team. So far so good…can’t wait to see how this team performs!

I agree Gary and thanks for your comment. A home playoff game at Beaver Stadium would be special. After last night, that game at USC now appears to be a bit more difficult than first thought.
