Penn State Wrestling Great Roman Bravo-Young Drops Olympic Debut

Roman Bravo-Young February 20, 2022 David Hague/NSN

Update: Harutyunyan lost in the quarterfinals, thus eliminating RBY.

Penn State wrestling great Roman Bravo-Youngโ€™s Olympic debut didnโ€™t go the way he hoped for.

Armeniaโ€™s Arsen Harutyunyan beat RBY 13-3, staring the bout with seven unanswered points.

RBY fell behind 4-0 within the first three minutes and never recovered. Armenia added two more on a takedown to go ahead 6-0. Bravo-Young did get a takedown with under two minutes left to make it 7-2.

For Bravo-Youngโ€” who won two national titles, was a three-time national finalist and a five-time All-Americanโ€” to medal at the Olympics, heโ€™ll need Harutyunyan to advance to the finals at 57 KG. Team USAโ€™s Spencer Leeโ€” who Penn State fans remember well from his career at Franklin Regional High School in the Pittsburgh area and his college career at Iowaโ€” is the favorite at that weight class. He started his Olympics with a 3-2 win over Chinaโ€™s Wanaho Zou.
