Update: Harutyunyan lost in the quarterfinals, thus eliminating RBY.
Penn State wrestling great Roman Bravo-Young’s Olympic debut didn’t go the way he hoped for.
Armenia’s Arsen Harutyunyan beat RBY 13-3, staring the bout with seven unanswered points.
RBY fell behind 4-0 within the first three minutes and never recovered. Armenia added two more on a takedown to go ahead 6-0. Bravo-Young did get a takedown with under two minutes left to make it 7-2.
For Bravo-Young— who won two national titles, was a three-time national finalist and a five-time All-American— to medal at the Olympics, he’ll need Harutyunyan to advance to the finals at 57 KG. Team USA’s Spencer Lee— who Penn State fans remember well from his career at Franklin Regional High School in the Pittsburgh area and his college career at Iowa— is the favorite at that weight class. He started his Olympics with a 3-2 win over China’s Wanaho Zou.
