This shouldn’t come as a surprise.
With the possible exception of the Michigan game scheduled for Nov. 18, this is the biggest matchup on Maryland’s home 2023 schedule.

Maryland is going all out for this game. It will be a Gold Out, and the team will honor that by wearing gold uniforms. Maryland will have to go all out to beat PSU, something it’s only done three times in 45 meetings. Only one of those wins took place in College Park, and that was in 1961 when Joe Paterno was still an assistant coach at PSU.
But it’s worth noting that two of Maryland’s three wins against Penn State have come in the James Franklin era.
Still, Franklin’s 7-2 against his old employer and 4-0 against Maryland on the road.
The most recent game Penn State played in College Park was almost exactly two years ago.
Penn State beat Maryland 31-14 in a game remembered as “The Jahan Dotson Show.” The start receiver went off for Penn State, ending the day with 11 catches, three touchdowns and a program-record 242 yards that no receiver has sniffed in the 25 games since. In that time, Dotson became Washington’s first-round pick and today is a receiver for the Commanders.
The current Penn State team is 7-1 and coming off a depressing loss at Ohio State and way-closer-than-expecting win over Indiana at Beaver Stadium the next week. Maryland started the season 5-0, but has lost its last three.
The last time Maryland won a game was Sept. 30.
To get off the schnide, Maryland will have to pull a hefty upset.
