There aren’t a lot of teams that are ranked ahead of Penn State, so when one of them loses, it’s noteworthy.
No. 3 Texas came into Saturday 5-0 and three spots ahead of Penn State in the AP Poll.
But Texas is unbeaten no more, falling to rival and 12-ranked Oklahoma in dramatic fashion, 34-30, in the Cotton Bowl.
The Red River Shootout exceeded its hype. Texas took a 30-27 lead on a 47-yard field goal by Bert Auburn with 1:17. QB Dillon Gabriel led a 5-play, 75-yard scoring drive that took 1:02 and ended with a three-yard pass from Gabriel to Nic Anderson. Whether or not this is good news for Penn State depends on if Oklahoma leapfrogs it in the rankings.
OU (6-0) now has one extra win over Penn State, which is also undefeated, so the possibility is definitely there.
In any case, Penn State’s biggest concern is the rest of the season. There are seven games left, and Ohio State is only two weeks away.
