Packers get 1st Dose of ‘Sean Clifford Experience’ in Preseason Win

Penn State Nittany Lions quarterback Sean Clifford (14) November 12, 2022 David Hague/NSN

Penn State fans grew familiar with something our Jarrod Prugar calls the “Sean Clifford Experience.”

Over his four years as Penn State’s starting quarterback, Clifford made plenty of good plays and plenty of not-so-good ones— at times doing each in the same game— over a rollercoaster college career that made him a polarizing figure amongst Penn State’s fanbase.

Time will tell how Clifford’s new fanbase in Green Bay will remember him.

But in Clifford’s preseason NFL debut Friday night— which fittingly took place in his hometown of Cincinnati against the Bengals— Packers fans for a dose of the “Sean Clifford Experience.”

It wasn’t always pretty. Clifford threw two interceptions, and one of them was returned by Cincinnati’s Tycen Anderson for a 43-yard touchdown. But Clifford ended the night completing 20 of 26 passes for 208 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions in a 36-19 Packers win.

On Clifford’s first drive, he led the team on a 8-play, 79-yard scoring march, ending on a 1-yard touchdown run by Tyler Goodson.

For his part, Clifford went 4-for-5 for 52 yards.

In the first half, Clifford— who relieved started Jordan Love— went 15-for-20 for 193 yards and a touchdown pass to Tyler Davis in the last minute of the first half.

Friday marked the first time since Clifford played at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati that he will don a uniform other than Penn State’s Blue and White.

Green Bay’s second preseason game will be Saturday, Aug. 19, against the Patriots at Lambeau Field. On this night, Penn State fans could see something they’ll never see again: Sean Clifford against Trace McSorley. Kickoff is scheduled for 8.
