Jay Paterno (‘91) will be on the Penn State Board of Trustees for three more years, as will Anthony Lubrano (‘82).
Penn State women’s soccer legend Ali Krieger (‘07) also got elected, and the three will start their terms July 1
There doesn’t seem to be anything polarizing about new board member Krieger, who won two World Cups with Team USA after her college career ended and will retire from the NWSL after this season.
Incumbent Jay Paterno has been a polarizing figure for Penn State fans since he coached under his legendary father. Incumbent Lubrano— who has been on the board for nine of the last 11 years— has openly stated that the reason he first ran for a seat in 2012 was because of what he felt was the University not acting appropriately in firing Joe Paterno amid the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal in November 2011.
Many Penn State fans see both Jay Paterno and Lubrano as part of the “old guard” that is holding the University back from reaching its full potential in the 2020s.
Here’s how the people of Twitter reacted to the latest Penn State BoT election results.
Another 3 years of the same old shit I guess. Good job baby boomers. Here’s your good job cake. https://t.co/BcOvoJuPrz pic.twitter.com/5NJhurNOMc
— Penn State Talk (@PSURecruitTalk) May 5, 2023
lol, don't blame baby boomers when only 25,000 vote
3.5% of eligible voters, pathetic— Jim Gibson (@JimGibson09) May 5, 2023
Fair. Anyone who could’ve voted but didn’t is just as much of a problem.
— Penn State Talk (@PSURecruitTalk) May 5, 2023
Unbelievable. https://t.co/UArPppZ8y4
— Rich Severin PT, DPT, PhD, CCS (@ptreviewer) May 5, 2023
Uh oh… looks like you’re gonna cry. Lubrano and Paterno elected. Sorry bout ur luck!
— Paterno Field at Beaver Stadium (@at_paterno) May 5, 2023
So when PSU continues to get one-upped in the changing landscape of College Athletics, I don't want to hear a damn thing from the older population who refuses to get with the times. https://t.co/husO8JrNaw
— Bobber (@chrishess22) May 5, 2023
The old guard still at large it appears https://t.co/ifjCN13EK8
— Murph (@RyanPMurphy16) May 5, 2023
Jay Paterno and Anthony Lubrano have each won seats on the Penn State Board of Trustees.
Penn State fans, describe how you’re feeling about that with a GIF. Let me see it. @NittanySN
— Joe Smeltzer (@joesmeltzer775) May 5, 2023
— Jay (@jspin80) May 5, 2023
That is unfortunate.
— Kent Gates (@KentGates) May 5, 2023
@JayPaterno continues to be a stain on Penn State. Move on, your dads been gone for ten plus years now. You need to be gone too.
— Joe Harre (@joe_harre) May 5, 2023
Awesome stuff. Jay Paterno is the man and does not suck
— Inspector Gadget (@Bag_White3) May 5, 2023
Jay Paterno is a useless goon who can’t stand that his last name doesn’t carry the same weight it used to.
— Drip Skylark (@bSp1n) May 5, 2023
I agree with you
— Inspector Gadget (@Bag_White3) May 5, 2023
Remember when Josh Pate said something along the lines of “PSU fans show up for the 12 Saturdays in the Fall but where’s the support the other 353 days?”
This is a good example of that. https://t.co/WQVeO1UliL
— PSU Everything (@PSU_Strong) May 5, 2023
I’m fine with this as long as I don’t hear whining from fans when Paterno and Lubrano keep trying to hamstring coaches and ADs on money for facilities and such. Y’all had a chance to make a difference and be progressive and the many that stood on the sidelines failed. Your right
— Bradley Minoski #EFCBoardOut 🧡💙🤍💚🖤💛🐧🦁🪵🪚 (@IamBradMinoski) May 5, 2023
It seems like a nearly universal that Paterno and Lubrano are not well liked among people that follow the program closely on twitter/message boards. I think there are just a lot of people who don’t follow the day to day and just vote based on names alone.
— Smoot (@PSU_Smoot) May 5, 2023
So annoying that nepotism baby Jay Paterno keeps getting re-elected.

BREAKING: Penn State Forward candidate @alikrieger was elected to the University’s highest governing board, the Board of Trustees. This is a HUGE win for our campaign and for Penn State. 🥳 pic.twitter.com/iTgwlrAbjw

Penn State alumni have chosen to vote for a more just, sustainable, and inclusive Penn State. We’re ready for protections for unionizing workers, gender/LGBT+ equity, climate action, and more at the highest level. https://t.co/vj5O8TFehg

WooHoo! Congratulations @alikrieger! Really well done! 👏🏻

🎉🎉🎉 Penn State alumni showed up for educational equity, labor rights, climate action, and democratic governance! @alikrieger will join the amazing @sciencerely on the Board of Trustees this July! https://t.co/9E7SIJct3S

Not Lubrano and Paterno
— Jaret Gold (@JaretGold) May 5, 2023
We are genuinely screwed
— nick (@DrewAllarSZN) May 5, 2023
Lubrano was a Spanier supporter so he was a no vote for me.
— DDM Fan (@FanDdm) May 5, 2023
Awesome that Krieger got 1 of the 3 stooges out. But sucks the 2 biggest cranks are still there.
Gotta think the people voting for those 2 (especially dumbass Lubrano) are dying out… Then again in these elections name recognition then anything out. https://t.co/82HgHYg3n4

— OrangeSeats1940 (@OrangeSeats1940) May 5, 2023
@JayPaterno should've been VOTED OUT. He doesn't care about the University and tried to take credit for #NIL & @success_w_honor. Glad there is another #NIL to support @lionslegacyclub that actually care about student athletes. https://t.co/tTeyltAwIN
— Chris (@HOSEMAN36) May 5, 2023
Glad Ali Krieger got in. As for the two clowns, this is why we as alumni can not have nice things https://t.co/nzDrfIN0v1
— J.T. (@JohnT41845158) May 5, 2023
Penn State has over 700,000 living alumni. The extremely small percentage of alumni who bother to vote is why Jay Paterno and Lubrano get re-elected all the time. pic.twitter.com/xSZxTStbic
— J.T. (@JohnT41845158) May 5, 2023
Because the actual percentage of alumni who vote is miniscule
— J.T. (@JohnT41845158) May 5, 2023
There is still a LARGE, dedicated base of voters who will support the name Paterno, no matter what. They are not on Twitter, and rarely on message boards.
Paterno and Lubrano were never in any danger of losing their seats on the Penn State board of trustees. And they knew that.
— Zach Seyko (@zach_seyko) May 5, 2023
For fucks sake https://t.co/E1GDq4SuFH
— Joey (@jschmidt139) May 5, 2023
Lubrano, Jay, Krieger. The athletics-only voters on Twitter in shambles.
— Kevin Horne (@KevinHornePSU) May 5, 2023
Ironic, I know.
— Kevin Horne (@KevinHornePSU) May 5, 2023
Yuck. Lubrano and @JayPaterno getting re-elected is awful for Penn State. Few people actively do more to hold back PSU athletics than those two clowns. There are Pitt fans who root for PSU football more often than Jay Paterno does.
— Marty 🌹 (@msj41817) May 5, 2023
So Paterno and Lubrano stay on the BOT, and Krieger is added. Crazy
— Ⓗⓐⓢⓗ (@HashTagPSU) May 5, 2023
How on earth do Jay and Lubrano keep fkn winning. Who are these people voting for them?
— Sekrah (@sekrah) May 5, 2023
Good lord our alumni either don’t give a fuck or they’re just incompetent these people don’t wanna see Franklin succeed https://t.co/HHj3Ll0hjW
