In football recruiting news Amaris Williams, a four-star Class of 2024 defensive lineman from North Carolina’s Clinton High School, has Penn State in his top five, he tweeted Thursday evening.

Penn State is a finalist along with Florida, Georgia, NC State and Tennessee. He has an official visit to NC State planned for the weekend of June 9 and one to Florida planned for the next weekend. He hasn’t set an official visit date for Penn State yet.

Williams hasn’t been a Penn State target for too long relatively speaking.

The school offered him earlier this week, and he’s certainly a compelling player. Williams is the No. 5 player in North Carolina according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. The composite ratings also have him as the 30th-ranked defensive lineman in the country and the No. 261 overall player from his class.

Williams spent time on both sides of the ball this past season.

Defensively, he finished the season with 18 sacks and 65 tackles.

Offensively, he ran the ball 32 times for 251 yards and scored five touchdowns. He also caught one pass that went for a 25-yard score.

247’s individual site rankings have Williams ranked even higher. 247 has Williams as the second-ranked player in North Carolina and, the No. 15 defensive linemen in the country and the No. 88 overall player nationally.

Along with his top five, Williams has offers from schools such as Auburn, Louisville, Missouri, Oklahoma, USC, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.

Penn State football has a 2024 recruiting class that’s currently 14 strong, ranking No. 7 in the nation according to 247. Of those 14, zero are defensive lineman. Penn State has three defensive linemen: Four-stars Joseph Mupoyi (St. Thomas More), Jameial Lyons (Philly) and three-star Tyriq Blanding (Middle Village, NY).
