Penn State Football: An Updated Breakdown of Coordinators, Position Coaches on James Franklin’s Staff

Penn State lost a member of its coaching staff when John Scott Jr. departed for the Detroit Lions, as first reported by Jon Sauber of the Centre Daily Times Monday evening.

 

With Scott gone, here’s an updated look at Penn State’s position coaches.

This breakdown will include how long the coaches have been at Penn State, where they coached directly before coming to Penn State and other notes of significance.

HEAD COACH

James Franklin (2014-)

Previous Stop: Vanderbilt HC (2011-13)

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

Manny Diaz (2022-)

Previous Stop: Miami HC (2019-21)

  • Diaz is also Penn State’s linebackers coach

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR

Mike Yurcich (2021)

Previous Stop: Texas OC/QB coach (2020)

  • Yurcich is also Penn State’s QB coach

DEFENSIVE LINE COACH

Phil Trautwein (2020-)

Previous Stop: Boston College OL coach  (2018-19)

Anthony Poindexter (2021-)

Previous Stop: Purdue safeties coach/co-DC (2017-20)

  • Poindexter is also Penn State’s co-DC

RECEIVERS COACH

Marques Hagans (2023-)

Previous Stop: Virginia WR coach (2013-22)

  • Hagans was also an offensive graduate assistant at Virginia from 2011-12
  • Hagans is Penn State’s offensive recruiting coordinator

CORNERBACKS COACH

Terry Smith (2014-)

Previous Stop: Temple WR coach (2013)

  • Smith is tied with Franklin for being the longest tenured member of Penn State’s coaching staff. He’s also the team’s associate head coach and defensive recruiting coordinator.

RUNNING BACKS COACH

Ja’Juan Seider (2018-)

Previous Stop: Florida RB coach (2017)

  • Seider is Penn State’s assistant head coach and co-offensive coordinator

TIGHT ENDS COACH

Ty Howle (2020-, TEs coach since 2021)

Previous Stop: Western Illinois (2016-19)

  • Howle was Western Illinois’ offensive line coach/recruiting coordinator from 2016-17 and the assistant head coach/co-offensive coordinator/offensive line coach from 2018-19
  • Howle started his time on Penn State’s staff as an offensive analyst for the 2020 season
  • Howle (2009-13) and Smith (1987-91) both lettered at Penn State

SPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATOR

Stacy Collins (2022-)

Previous Stop: Boise State ST Coordinator (2021)

  • Collins also coaches Penn State’s outside linebackers and nickels.
