Penn State Hosting Handful of Top WPIAL Recruits

As football recruiting heats up over the next few months, more players will travel across the country to try and find the school for them.

Penn State is known for their heavy recruiting of Western Pennsylvania, particularly in the WPIAL. They recently received a commitment from Pittsburgh Central Catholic four-star linebacker Anthony Speca in the Class of 2024 this Tuesday. Ta’Mere Robinson, a four-star defensive end at Brashear in the City League, is also a part of Penn State’s Class of 2023.

The Nittany Lions are expecting five WPIAL players to make a visit to State College, Pa. this weekend. This includes North Hills offensive/defensive lineman Logan Greer and Hampton wide receiver Benny Hasslerig in the Class of 2023.

Greer did not allow any sacks in 2022 with 48 pancakes at right guard/center, while also making 28 tackles, 11 for a loss, 2.5 sacks and one interception at defensive tackle. Hasselrig led Hampton with 54 catches for 867 receiving yards and 10 receiving touchdowns in 2022.

Both Greer and Hasslerig are likely being looked at as preferred walk-on players.

Penn State are also hosting some of the best players in the WPIAL in the Class of 2024 as well. Belle Vernon five-star running back Quinton Martin is one of those players making the visit. The Class of 2024 playmaker had more than 2,000 all-purpose yards for Belle Vernon, as they won the WPIAL and PIAA 3A titles in 2022.

Martin rushed 145 times for 1,279 yards and 22 touchdowns and also caught 28 passes for 424 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns. He holds offers from numerous top schools, including Pitt, WVU, Florida State, Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Tennessee and Texas.

Pittsburgh Central Catholic three-star wide receiver Peter Gonzalez is also making the trip and could join Speca as a part of the Class of 2024 for the Nittany Lions. Gonzalez also holds offers from ACC schools in Pitt, Miami and Virginia Tech, Big 12 schools in WVU and Cincinnati, and Wisconsin in the Big Ten.

Finally, three-star offensive lineman Ryan Cory out of Pine Richland will make a visit to Penn State. Cory played a large role in a strong rushing attack that averaged over 200 yards on the ground per game. That success led Pine Richland to WPIAL and PIAA 5A titles in 2022.

Cory does not have a Penn State offer yet. He currently holds offers from ACC schools in Pitt, Duke, Boston College and Louisville, Big 12 schools in Kansas State, Cincinnati, West Virginia and Kansas, SEC schools in Kentucky and Vanderbilt, as well as Notre Dame and Oregon.
