Penn State Receives PWO Commitment from 2023 Athlete Winston Yates

Winston Yates, a Class of 2023 wide receiver and defensive back from Paul VI High school in Haddonfield, New Jersey, has committed to Penn State as a preferred walk-on.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Yates visited Penn State for its Nov. 12 game against Maryland, and he received an offer from Penn State on Nov. 15.

He got on Penn State’s radar over the course of this past season starting with his performance against Highland High School in September when he recorded three catches for 99 yards and a touchdown in a 31-30 victory.

All season long Yates has shown the versatility to contribute in all three phases of the game, where he was making plays on offense with catching passes on intermediate and deep routes. On defense, he has shown to make plays as a free safety in the box and playing in coverage. Yates also can not only be a gunner on special teams, as well as return kickoffs which are shown on his Hudl tape.

Check out his game tape vs Clayton High School:

With Yates’ versatility, he will have the opportunity to contribute right away on special teams until Penn State figures out what role they will have for him. Some scouts believe that Yates has the frame to possibly be moved to linebacker as he figures to redshirt and use 2023 as a developmental year, and then in 2024, he will have a chance to make an impact.
