7 Michigan State Players Charged with Assault for Roles in Tunnel Incident at Michigan

A few days before Michigan State plays No. 11 Penn State at Beaver Stadium, seven Spartan players have been charged with assault crimes for their participation in a brawl in Michigan’s tunnel after Michigan State’s 29-7 loss to Michigan Oct. 29. The Washtenaw County Prosecutors Office announced the charges Wednesday.

Michigan State defensive back Khary Crump faces the most serious charge: Felony assault. He faces this charge for hitting Michigan defensive back Gemon Green in the head with his helmet. Green suffered a concussion as a result of the incident and missed the following week’s game before coming back against Nebraska Nov. 12.

Michigan State defensive lineman Jacoby Windmon was charged with one count of assault and battery for his role in the incident.
Itayvion Brown, Angelo Grose, Justin White, Brandon Wright and Zion Young were all charged with aggravated assault. The video showed the aforementioned players kicking and punching Michigan defensive back Ja’Den Burroughs while he was on the ground.

University of Michigan President Santa J. Ono made a statement after the charges were filed  Wednesday and commended the swift prosecution of the instigators involved and expressed sympathy with the incident’s victims.

“At the University of Michigan, we appreciate the thoughtful, deliberate approach from the Washtenaw County Prosecuter’s Office to this unfortunate incident,” Ono said.

“We also want to express our concern for all the players involved, especially those who were injured. The University of Michigan will cooperate fully with any other reviews of this matter.”
