Penn State beat Northwestern, which makes every Penn State fan happy.
How it won is another story.
Penn State turned the ball over five times, four on fumbles. Sean Clifford wasn’t sharp at QB, finishing the day 10-20 for 140 yards and a first-quarter touchdown pass to tight end Brenton Strange.
Coach James Franklin’s team came into the game a 25.5-point favorite and won 17-7. With Penn State playing Michigan in Ann Arbor for its next game Oct. 15, then hosting Minnesota and Ohio State back to back after that, many fans are concerned about what might happen if Penn State doesn’t straighten up before that stretch.
Here’s what Twitter had to say about Penn State’s win.
Was that the game we wanted to see today?
No, of course not.The team has a lot to work on, but they played in the remnants of a hurricane. That doesn’t excuse some bad Clifford play, but it better explains the four fumbles.
Penn State got the win. Now bring on the Wolverines. pic.twitter.com/8ByTP9QaEt

This is the nastiest college football game I’ve ever seen. Penn State has no business winning it. 4 fumbles omg the ball is wet I can’t hold it give me a break. Northwestern so bad for not capitalizing. Embarrassing lol

No way this team competes with UM or tOSU with this offense and especially this QB.

Not sure last year’s team wins that game.

This is the type of game that makes you want to bench Clifford outright
— Overtime Heroics-Penn State (@OTHPennState) October 1, 2022
Please…please….please bench Clifford. Still making freshman mistakes as a 30 year old

Would Nick Saban put up with this qb play from Sean Clifford? No. Allar would be playing and clifford would be on the bench. So why do we tolerate it? #WeAre #PennState

When they say a win is a win, they are talking about that Penn State game. What a sloppy mess. If they fumble that much against Michigan, it will be another blowout in the Big House

Penn State will head into the bye week at 5-0 but even with awful conditions this team feels like it's miles from what it put on the field against Auburn. Could be sleepwalking, could be foreshadowing. Check back in a few weeks.

Nick Singleton had 87 yards in basically one half.
Kaytron Allen had 86 yards in literally one half.
People will focus on the fumbles, but Penn State wasn’t far from having two 100-yard rushers today. And that’s exciting.

Overall, just a sloppy day in sloppy conditions. I’m not gonna get super low but I’m not going into the bye with confidence either.
That being said, thank God we have a bye week. I need a break.
5-0. It’s make or break time for this season. #WeAre🔵⚪️
