On Thursday, Penn State football named their team captains for the 2022 season. They are quarterback Sean Clifford, center Juice Scruggs safety JiAyir Brown, defensive tackle PJ Mustipher, linebacker Jonathan Sutherland, and long snapper Chris Stoll.

Clifford is in his sixth year at Penn State and his fourth as the starting quarterback. He is the most experienced player on their offense that has been a leader for Penn State on and off the field he is on the preseason watchlists for Davey O’Brien, Maxwell, and Walter Camp awards.

Scruggs is a 6-foot-3, 310-pound senior who will be counted on to anchor a young offensive line. He started all 13 games for Penn State and earned All-Big Ten honorable mention in 2021. He was recently named to the Dave Remington award watchlist.

Brown (5-foot-11, 210-pounds) is in his second year starting with the Penn State program coming from Lackawanna Community College. He is coming off a year where he tied for the most interceptions and earned a third-team All-Big ten selection. He is on the Jim Thorpe and Chuck Bednarik preseason award watch lists.

Mustipher was an impact player in the middle of Penn State’s defensive line, and it was not a coincidence that Penn State missed his leadership and his production. Penn State went 2-5 without the 6-foot-5, 320-pound behemoth, and he is fully healthy following rehab in the offseason. Mustipher is on the preseason award watchlist for both the Outland Trophy and the Lombardi Award.

Sutherland, who is also in his sixth year in the Penn State program, will switch positions from safety to linebacker to SAM outside linebacker and will still be counted on to also be a contributor on special teams. Sutherland is on the Paul Hornung award preseason watchlist.

Stoll is a veteran long snapper that will be providing stability to the kicking game and will start a new punter and kicker in 2022. Stoll is on the preseason watchlist for the Patrick Mannelly award, which is rewarded annually to the best long snapper in the country.
