DeShawn Harris-Smith, a Class of 2023 four-star basketball recruit out of Fairfax, Virginia, narrowed his school choice down to five, and Penn State made the list.

Penn State is in the running along with Indiana, Maryland, Villanova, and Xavier for the 6-foot-4, 180-pound shooting guard. Harris-Smith is the number one recruit in Virginia, the No. 12 shooting guard, and the No. 63 overall recruit in the country, according to On3 consensus rankings.
Harrissmith took part in the Nike Elite Level Youth Basketball circuit over the summer and averaged 12.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while shooting almost 60 percent from the floor and 41 percent from deep playing for Team Takeover.
Harris-Smith plays for St. Paul VI Catholic High School, where he averaged 14.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 2.2 steals, leading his team to the Washington (D.C) Catholic League and a state championship. He was named the Virginia Division 1 Player of the Year.
Scouts describe Harris-Smith as a player with a point-wing skill set. They see a player that loves to drive to the basket and doesnโt shy away from contact, but he wants his teammates involved in the offense and can take over the game when needed.
Harris-Smith spoke on Penn State when he spoke to On3 national basketball recruiting analyst Joe Tipton.
โThey have believed in me since the very beginning and have shown loyalty and real love to me. I feel like I would have a great relationship with the coaching staff from day one. I would have the chance to come in and start right away. Coach {Micah) Shrewsberry has been in the NBA and has a chip on my shoulder to rebuild the program.
If Harris-Smith were to commit, he would join Logan Imes and Braeden Shrewsberry in their 2023 recruiting class and beat out two Big Ten teams for the talented guard.
