The Gavitt Tipoff Games are early regular-season matchups featuring teams from the Big Ten playing against a team from the Big East. The event is named after Big East founder Dave Gavitt, who also served as the first commissioner of the Big East.
Penn State is 2-1 all-time in Gavitt Games matchups with the last time that they played in the tipoff classic, they won 81-66 at Georgetown in 2019. Penn State split a home and home with DePaul in their only other Gavitt games matchups, with each team winning at home in 2015 and 2018 respectively.
This matchup will mark the return of head coach Thad Matta, who was an assistant at Butler from 1997-2000, and as head coach from 2000-01 before he became the head coach at Xavier and Ohio State.
Penn State will look to improve on a 14-17 record with a group of veteran players returning with Myles Dread, Jaden Pickett, and Seth Lundy and the highest-rated recruiting class in school history, headlined by Evan McHaffey, Jameel Brown, and Keeba Njie and new transfers Camryn Winter. and Andrew Funk.
