Former Lackawanna College defensive back Tyrese Mills has arrived in Happy Valley to join the Penn State program.

Mills is a 6-foot-1, 195-pound safety that played for Northeast High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he played under current Penn State graduate assistant Deion Barnes who served as the defensive coordinator at Northeast. He will be entering campus with his former teammate and Class of 2022 four-star pass rusher Ken Talley.

Mills was the No. 11 overall athlete in the Class of 2022 junior college rankings according to 247 Sports. In seven games last season he recorded 35 tackles, five pass breakups, one sack, and one forced fumble.

Mills is looking to follow the same path as other Penn State safeties that came from Lackawanna College (Scranton, Pennsylvania) in Jaquan Brisker, who was an All-American who was a first-team All-Big Ten, and second-team All-American in 2021. Brisker was drafted in the second round by the Chicago Bears in April’s draft.

He will be playing alongside another fellow former Falcon in Ji’Ayir Brown, who led the team with six interceptions in 2021 and is regarded as one of the best safeties in the Big Ten conference.

Mills will be competing for the starting strong safety position left behind by Brisker with senior Keaton Ellis, sophomore Jaylen Reed, and redshirt freshman Zakee Wheatley.
