Former Penn State offensive lineman Steven Gonzalez is looking to continue his football career in the USFL.
Gonzalez, who was on the offseason rosters of the Arizona Cardinals and Buffalo Bills the past two seasons, has put his name in the draft pool for the spring football league, which is re-launching this summer.
The revamped league, featuring eight of the original teams will begin play April 16. Its player selection meeting will be held Feb. 22 and 23, with picks being announced on each team’s social media channels. All eight teams of the new league will play their home games in Birmingham, Alabama for the 2022 season.
Gonzalez is the first former Penn State player to be announced as part of the draft pool. the entire pool hasn’t yet been finalized and there will be a second selection for players that are late to sign with the league.
Gonzalez signed with Buffalo last May and played in one preseason game with the Bills before being released Aug. 21. He was with the Arizona Cardinals for training camp in 2020, but was released at the end of camp and spent the 2020 regular season out of football.
Gonzalez was a three-year starter for the Nittany Lions, garnering second-team All-Big Ten honors as a senior in 2019, following up on a 2018 season in which he named honorable mention All-Big Ten by the coaches and media. A Union City, New Jersey native, Gonzalez graduated from Penn State with a degree in history.
